Have you ever noticed how hard it is to come up with a brilliant plan to guaranteed success?
Whether you’re trying to build a business, improve your health, or write every single day, trying to figure out the "secret formula" for winning can feel overwhelming. There are a million different paths, and everyone online gives conflicting advice.
Years ago, a very wise investor named Charlie Munger figured out a shortcut around this problem.
Before he became one of the most successful stock investors in history (working right alongside Warren Buffett), Charlie worked as a World War II meteorologist predicting dangerous weather for airplanes, and later as a real estate lawyer. In both jobs, making a single giant mistake could cost lives or millions of dollars.
So Charlie developed a superpower. He stopped trying to figure out how to be a genius. Instead, he spent his whole life focusing on how NOT to be stupid.
He called this idea Inversion.
Imagine you are standing at the entrance of a giant, terrifying maze.
If you try to find your way to the center from the front entrance, there are hundreds of wrong turns. It’s easy to get lost, frustrated, and give up.
But what happens if you look at the maze from the exit and trace your steps backward? Suddenly, all the dead ends disappear. The correct path becomes glaringly obvious.
That is what Inversion is.
Instead of asking:
"How do I make my life, my business, or my day amazing?"
You flip the question completely backwards and ask:
"What would completely RUIN my life, my business, or my day?"
Charlie used to joke:
"All I want to know is where I'm going to die, so I'll never go there."
It sounds silly, but think about how powerful that is!
Why "Not Being Stupid" Beats "Trying to Be Smart"
Our brains struggle with complex, unpredictable goals like "How do I become rich?" or "How do I become super happy?" There are too many moving pieces.
But our brains are amazing at spotting danger, bad habits, and obvious mistakes.
If you want to have a healthy marriage, you don't need to perform grand movie-style romantic gestures every week. Just stop lying, stop ignoring your partner, and stop holding grudges.
If you want to be productive today, you don't need a fancy 10-step morning routine. Just turn off your phone notifications and go to bed early.
If you want to run a successful business, you don't need a revolutionary idea. Just don't treat your customers poorly, don't run out of cash, and don't make promises you can't keep.
When you systematically delete everything that causes failure, success is usually what’s left over.
Invert, Always Invert
Charlie borrowed his favorite motto from an old mathematician: "Invert, always invert."
Whenever you feel stuck on a project or an idea, stop pushing forward. Turn around and ask the opposite question:
Instead of: "How do I write a great blog post?"
Ask: "What would make a blog post boring and unreadable?" (Then avoid those things!)
Instead of: "How do I build a great relationship with my family?"
Ask: "What actions would make my family resent me?" (Then stop doing them!)
Instead of: "How do I stay energized all day?"
Ask: "What drains every ounce of my energy by 2 PM?" (Then cut it out!)
Success isn't always about adding shiny new habits or finding magical hacks. Most of the time, it’s simply about removing the things that pull you down.
So today, don't worry about trying to be a genius. Just take a look at your life, find one obvious thing that causes you to fail, and throw it away.
